OVERVIEW

The University of Delaware (UD) is a research-intensive, learner-centered university with global impact. Our University community includes over 24,000 undergraduate and graduate students representing over 100 countries and hundreds of academic disciplines.

From our roots as a private academy in 1743, UD is one of the oldest institutions in the U.S. Our legacy extends to three signers of the Declaration of Independence who were members of UD’s first class, and continues today through trailblazing discoveries and innovative firsts. Among our faculty and alumni are Nobel laureates, Fulbright, Rhodes, Marshall, Truman and Goldwater scholars, as well as members of the National Academy of the Sciences.

You will find UD graduates as leaders in politics, industry and the arts, including U.S. President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, and game changers in the world of art conservation, solar energy, cognitive development, marine policy and touch technology.

UD is a classic American university situated on the East coast of the United States. Our enviable location—midway between New York City and Washington, D.C. and a short 45-minute drive from Philadelphia—allows for meaningful connections, resources and opportunities. Delaware’s picture-perfect and ideal-sized campus is a walkable, historic space with classic architecture and a central green lawn (called 'The Green') for informal gathering and special events. Our home is the quintessential college town of Newark, Delaware whose Main Street is lined with shops, cafes and restaurants catering to the college crowd.

The University of Delaware offers 150+ undergraduate majors, 100+ minors, and 200+ graduate and professional programs spanning nine colleges, including:

- Agriculture and Natural Resources
- Arts and Sciences
- Lerner College of Business and Economics
- Earth, Ocean and Environment
- Education and Human Development
- Engineering
- Health Sciences.

Our distinguished faculty and state-of-the-art facilities support UD’s academic, research and service activities. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching classifies UD as a research university with very high research activity, a designation given to less than 3% of U.S. colleges and universities.

Contributing to our vibrant campus culture are fine and performing arts, 400+ student groups, entrepreneurial incubators and spirited NCAA Division I Blue Hen athletics. Over 4,500 international students, scholars and their families are part of the UD academic community.

Outstanding GEMS students who meet the eligibility requirements may be awarded $5,000-$18,000 GEMS International Scholarships for full-time undergraduate programmes at the University of Delaware.
